Our Story
Recess Skate Co was born out of necessity, solidarity, belonging, and the fight against isolation. Founded by teacher, Army veteran, designer, dad, and skater, AJ Jensen, in Aurora, Colorado, this isn’t just a skate shop — it’s a media house, skate magazine, storytelling engine, a brand, and a community hub built on the idea that play never dies. We are dedicated to telling the stories of overlooked skaters in middle states, and sharing the joy of skateboarding.
Recess is for everyone, no requirements to show up. We believe in sharing the life-changing possibilities of skateboarding with all humans, regardless of race, ability, financial situation, or location. Our goal is to make skateboarding accessible, visible, and community oriented.
We design decks, drop merch, publish stories, film our crew, and show up for skaters of every age, background, and ability. Old heads, new kids, returners, adaptive riders — RECESS is for everyone.
All proceeds from the shop support the mission of our skate team. We strive to support community including decks, wheels, free food and drinks at events, stickers at the park, adaptive support, and real moments that bring people together.
AJ runs Recess out of his house so he can stay available to his disabled wife who needs him at home. His goal is to fund decks, and community gatherings for the Aurora and greater Denver area community of skaters, and to tell the stories of the REAL skaters grinding and carving every day in real life skate culture. Part media house, part skate shop, definitely not fitting into any boxes.
